Telegram Video Downloader for PC: Every Option Compared

A computer is the one platform where every method works — which is the opposite of the situation on phones, where the good tooling simply does not exist. If you have a PC available, you have the full set of options.
There are three, they suit different jobs, and picking the right one takes about thirty seconds once you know what separates them.

Route 1: the official Telegram Desktop app
If you already have it installed, start here — right-click a video and choose Save As. No extra software, original quality, works on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Two settings worth knowing, both under Settings → Advanced: the download path (default is a Telegram Desktop folder inside your system Downloads), and automatic media downloading, which is what silently fills a disk when you belong to busy channels.
Its limitation is volume. There is no multi-select save, so archiving a channel means clicking every file individually.
Route 2: Telegram Web plus a browser extension
This is the route for saving often, saving in bulk, or saving media where the built-in option never appears in the first place. The extension adds a Save button directly onto media inside web.telegram.org:
- Install TG Downloader for Chrome, Edge or Brave — free, no account, 5 downloads a day.
- Open web.telegram.org and sign in.
- Open any chat, group or channel you can already view.
- Click Save — the file lands in Downloads at original quality, and the button turns green so you never save the same one twice.
For whole channels, batch download and ZIP export collects everything visible to you in one pass instead of file by file.
Route 3: screen recording (last resort only)
Windows has Xbox Game Bar (Win+G), macOS has Shift+Cmd+5, and OBS works everywhere. This captures pixels rather than files, so it works on anything you can watch — at the cost of a re-encoded copy at screen quality rather than the original.

Why the web route handles cases the app cannot
Telegram Web does not hand the browser a finished file — it streams video in small chunks over HTTP Range requests. An extension can reassemble the original file from that same stream your player is already reading, which is why a Save button can appear on media where the client itself offers no save option, and why there is no re-encoding anywhere in the chain.
There is also a client quirk worth knowing: there are two separate Telegram Web codebases, web.telegram.org/a and web.telegram.org/k. Menus differ, and media offering nothing in one sometimes behaves normally in the other.
Common questions
Does this work on Mac and Linux? Yes — both routes are cross-platform. The extension needs Chrome, Edge, Brave or another Chromium browser.
Can I download from private channels on PC? Yes, for channels you have joined. See downloading from private Telegram channels.
My download keeps failing partway. Usually storage, network or cache — eight fixes covers it in order of speed.
Do I need Telegram Premium? No. Premium raises upload limits; saving media you can already watch works on a free account.
