Is Telegram Premium worth it?

Is Telegram Premium worth it? Yes, if you regularly hit one of its limits: sending files over 2 GB, transcribing lots of voice messages, translating whole chats, or running out of folders and channels. For everyone else it's mostly cosmetic. It costs $4.99 a month or $35.99 a year in the US App Store (about $3 a month), and less in many countries: ₹319 a month in India and ₱215 in the Philippines on iPhone. Cloud storage is unlimited on the free plan already, and since 2023 free users get two voice transcriptions a week.

The features that change how the app works
- 4 GB uploads. Free accounts can send files up to 2 GB; Premium doubles it. Anyone can download a 4 GB file a Premium user sends, so only the sender needs it. More in Telegram's file size limit.
- Transcription. Tap the →A button on a voice or video message to read it as text. Since November 2023 free users get two a week; Premium is unlimited.
- Whole-chat translation. Translating a single message is free for everyone. Premium adds a Translate bar that translates an entire group or channel as you read.
- Doubled limits. These matter only if you were hitting them (see the table below).
- Privacy extras. Hiding your own last-seen time is free, but with Premium you can hide yours and still see other people's. You can also limit new chats from strangers to contacts and Premium users.
- Telegram Business. Opening hours, location, quick replies, greeting and away messages are included at no extra cost.
Faster downloads: what Telegram actually promises
This is the most over-sold perk. Telegram's FAQ says only that Premium lifts download speed limits "on Telegram's side" and that, if speed doesn't improve, your device or connection is the limit. Its developer documentation indicates free accounts are slowed only after very heavy use, in the region of tens of gigabytes. If you download a few videos a week, you probably won't notice a difference.
Faster downloads also don't change where a file ends up. If what you actually want is a copy of videos from your own chats on your computer, that's a different job. The folder limit is the one figure where Telegram's own sources disagree (20 at launch, higher in newer documentation), so check it in the app if it matters to you.
The cosmetic half
Premium stickers and reactions, custom emoji, emoji statuses, animated profile pictures, profile colours, app icons, message effects and a badge next to your name. Enjoyable, but nobody should be paying for these alone.
Stories get extras too: stealth mode for viewing, a permanent list of who viewed yours, longer captions with links, and saving other people's stories when they allow it. Newer additions in 2025 and 2026 include shared checklists, a rich text editor for long formatted messages, and turning off forwarding and saving in your own one-to-one chats.
Premium also hides Telegram's official sponsored messages in large public channels. Ads that channel owners post themselves still appear.

These are iPhone prices, which include Apple's fees and local tax. Google Play prices can differ. Many pages still quote ₹179 for India or ₱139.99 for the Philippines; those were 2022 launch prices. To see your own price, open Settings → Telegram Premium.
- Pay yearly. Telegram says this saves up to 40% compared with paying monthly.
- @PremiumBot is cheaper because no app store takes a cut. It only works in Telegram Desktop, Telegram Web and the Android app downloaded directly from telegram.org, not in the App Store or Google Play versions, so iPhone users can't use it. On @PremiumBot, your first price is based on your phone number's country, then on your card's country.
- Gifts and giveaways. Someone can gift you 3, 6 or 12 months, including with Telegram Stars. Gifts are priced at Telegram's global rate rather than your local price. Some channels run Premium giveaways, which are free to the winner.
- Avoid resellers. Unofficial sellers of codes or shared accounts aren't endorsed by Telegram, and Telegram's terms say purchases aren't refundable.
If you cancel
Cancel where you subscribed: in iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions, in Google Play → Payments and subscriptions, or by sending /stop to @PremiumBot. Deleting the app doesn't cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription.
You keep Premium until the paid period ends. After that nothing is deleted, but extras are locked: only your first 10 folders work, pins beyond five are removed, saved GIFs past 200 are hidden, and your bio shows its first 70 characters. Files you already sent stay where they are.
