Telegram Web vs Desktop vs mobile

By the TG Downloader team · Updated 7 September 2026

The three Telegram clients are not the same app in different windows. Secret Chats work only on mobile, because they are device-bound and cannot exist on a client that syncs from the cloud. Exporting your account data works only on Telegram Desktop. Browser extensions work only on Telegram Web, since the other two are not web pages. Everything else — chats, channels, groups, Saved Messages, media — is shared across all three because it lives on Telegram’s servers.

Side by side

Telegram Web (web.telegram.org) runs in a browser, stores almost nothing locally, and needs no installation. It exists in two versions, K and A, which look different and are both official. It is the only client a browser extension can extend.

Telegram Desktop is a native application for Windows, macOS and Linux. It caches aggressively, has the account export tool, and handles large files best.

The mobile apps are the most complete: Secret Chats, contact syncing, calls, location sharing and the settings that only ever appear on a phone.

What only mobile can do

Secret Chats. They are end-to-end encrypted between two specific devices with no server copy, which is architecturally incompatible with a client that reconstructs your chat list from the cloud. This is why they never appear on Web or Desktop, and why they do not survive changing phones.

Some account-level actions — changing your number, certain privacy settings, and the initial registration of an account — are mobile-only or mobile-first.

What only Desktop can do

Export Telegram data, covered in our guide to exporting chat history. Neither Web nor mobile offers it.

Sustained large-file handling. Desktop is the most reliable client for multi-gigabyte transfers, and it keeps files in a folder you control rather than in an app sandbox.

What only Web can do

Run browser extensions. Because Telegram Web is a web page, an extension can add functionality to it — batch selection, save buttons, filtering — that neither native client can accept. This is the entire reason download extensions target Web rather than Desktop.

Work on a locked-down machine where you cannot install software, which is a genuine use case in offices and libraries.

The trade-off is that it is the slowest of the three on repeat visits, because it caches very little.

Frequently asked

Why can I not see Secret Chats on Telegram Web?

Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted and stored only on the two devices in the conversation, with no copy on Telegram’s servers. A web or desktop client builds your chat list from the server, so there is nothing for it to display.

Is Telegram Web as safe as the app?

For ordinary cloud chats the security model is the same, since both are protected in transit and stored on Telegram’s servers. The practical difference is the machine: a browser session on a shared computer is a bigger risk than the app on your own phone, so end the session under Settings → Devices when you finish.

What is the difference between Telegram Web K and Web A?

They are two official web clients with different interfaces and slightly different feature sets, maintained in parallel. Both sign into the same account and show the same chats; which one you get depends on the URL, and you can switch between them freely.
