What a Telegram backup actually contains

Two different things called backup

The first is “will my chats survive losing this phone”, and the answer is yes automatically, with no action required. Cloud chats, groups, channels and Saved Messages are on Telegram’s servers.

The second is “do I have a copy that does not depend on Telegram or on my account continuing to exist”, and the answer is no unless you export one. These are very different guarantees and the app’s wording does not distinguish them.

The export tool, and its 24-hour delay

Telegram Desktop only — the mobile apps cannot do this. Settings → Advanced → Export Telegram data. You choose which chats, which media types, a size cap, and HTML or JSON output.

The first request triggers a security delay of around 24 hours, during which you must confirm from an already-authorised device. This is a deliberate anti-theft measure: it means someone who briefly gains access to your account cannot quietly walk off with your entire history. Plan around it rather than being surprised by it.

HTML output is browsable and pleasant to read. JSON is the one to pick if you intend to process the data or move it somewhere else.

What the export leaves out

Secret Chats, always. They exist only on the devices in the conversation and are not part of your account data.

Anything you exclude via the size cap. The default limit quietly skips large videos, which is the most common reason an export finishes suspiciously fast and is missing exactly what you wanted.

Messages deleted before the export ran. There is no history beyond what currently exists.

When the export is the wrong tool

For one channel’s media rather than an entire account, an export is a slow way to get there — it wants to process everything and then you dig the files out of a folder tree.

How do I back up Telegram chats?

Ordinary chats are already on Telegram’s servers and restore automatically when you sign in elsewhere. For a copy you hold yourself, use Telegram Desktop → Settings → Advanced → Export Telegram data, which writes HTML or JSON plus media to your computer.

Why is Telegram export taking so long to start?

The first export request carries a security delay of roughly 24 hours and must be confirmed from an already-authorised device. This prevents someone with brief access to your account from exporting your history unnoticed.

Does a Telegram export include Secret Chats?

No. Secret Chats are stored only on the two devices in the conversation and are not part of your account data, so nothing can export them.
