Using Telegram Saved Messages as cloud storage

What it actually is

Saved Messages behaves like any other chat, except the only participant is you. Anything forwarded into it — messages, photos, videos, documents, voice notes, links — is stored on Telegram’s servers and appears on every device signed into the account.

There is no storage quota. The per-file ceiling is the same 2 GB free / 4 GB Premium that applies everywhere else, and there is no limit on the number of files.

Where it works well

Moving a file between your own devices without a cable or a third-party service, which is what most people use it for.

Keeping a copy of something posted in a channel that might be deleted later. A forward into Saved Messages creates an independent copy that survives the original being removed — one of the few ways to do that inside Telegram itself.

As a scratchpad. Notes, links and voice memos to yourself are searchable and synced, and it is quicker than opening a notes app.

Where it falls down

There are no folders. Everything is one chronological stream, and once it holds a few thousand items, finding a specific file means scrolling or getting lucky with search. Tagging things with a keyword when you save them is the usual workaround.

Search matches message text and file names, not file contents. A PDF whose name is “scan_0043.pdf” is effectively unfindable.

It is not a backup. It lives inside one account with a single point of failure — lose the two-step verification password without a recovery email and the content goes with the account. Anything irreplaceable should exist somewhere that does not depend on that.

Getting things back out in bulk

Saving one file is a tap. Getting several hundred out is the part people hit a wall on, because Telegram has no “download all” in Saved Messages.

Telegram Desktop’s export tool will produce the whole thing as a folder of files plus an index — see our guide to exporting chat history. For a subset rather than everything, a browser extension that adds batch selection to Telegram Web is the faster route.

Is Telegram Saved Messages really unlimited?

Yes for total volume — there is no storage quota on a Telegram account. Individual files are still capped at 2 GB, or 4 GB with Premium.

Can anyone else see my Saved Messages?

No other user can. They are private to your account. They are stored on Telegram’s servers rather than end-to-end encrypted, however, which is a different guarantee from a Secret Chat — anything you would not want held on a server should not go there.

Do Saved Messages get deleted if the original is deleted?

No. A forward creates an independent copy, so it survives the original message or channel post being removed. This is the main reason people forward things into it.
