Telegram storage full? What is actually using the space

Telegram keeps a local copy of photos, videos, voice notes and files you open, plus anything automatic download fetched in advance. That's what makes reopening a chat instant. Telegram's own screen describes it plainly: the media stays in the Telegram cloud and can be re-downloaded if you need it again.

Three things usually make it balloon:

• Private chats are kept forever by default. On current versions, cached media from groups is removed after a month and from channels after a week, but private chats default to Forever.
• Automatic download on Wi-Fi. Videos and files fetched in advance land in the cache whether or not you ever watch them. See auto-download settings.
• Copies outside the cache. Save to Gallery (Android) and Save to Camera Roll (iPhone) put a second copy in your photo library. Clearing Telegram's cache doesn't touch those, which is the most common reason storage barely drops after a clear.

How to clear it, on each app

On a phone, the screen shows a chart of what Telegram uses, broken down into photos, videos, files, music, voice messages, stories, stickers and "Other". Tick only the categories you want gone. If one channel is responsible for most of it, tap that chat in the list and clear just its media.

On Android, don't go hunting through folders with a file manager. Since Android 11, Telegram's files sit in a protected app folder that most file managers can't open, and the in-app screen is the safe way to clear them.

Clear Cache vs Clear Local Database (Android)

Android also offers Clear Local Database in the ⋮ menu of the same screen. It doesn't delete media; it deletes the cached text of messages and compacts the database. Your cloud chats reload from the server, just more slowly the first time. It frees less space than Clear Cache, and it never reaches zero, because Telegram needs some data to run.

iPhone: "Documents & Data"

In iPhone Settings → General → iPhone Storage, Telegram's "Documents & Data" includes its cache. Offload App won't shrink it: Apple's storage guide says offloading keeps an app's documents and data. Clearing the cache inside Telegram does. Some people report Documents & Data staying larger than Telegram's own total; clearing the cache again after an app update usually helps.

Stop it filling up again

Clearing is a one-off. Two settings on the same Storage Usage screen keep it under control for good.

• Auto-remove cached media (Keep Media). Set separately for Private Chats, Groups, Channels and Stories: 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or Forever (stories: 1 day, 2 days or 1 week). Media you haven't opened in that time is removed from the device and re-downloads if you scroll back. Changing Private Chats from Forever to 1 month is usually the single biggest win. You can add exceptions for chats you want kept longer.
• Maximum cache size. When the cache passes the limit, the oldest media goes first. The choices depend on your phone's storage, typically from 5 GB up to No limit, and the default is No limit.
• Automatic download. Turn off videos and files on Wi-Fi as well as mobile data, or cap their size. Covered in our auto-download guide.
• Save to Gallery / Save to Camera Roll. If it's on for channels or groups, every image is copied into your photo library too. Turn it off where you don't need it.

On Telegram Desktop, open Manage limits in the local storage screen. You can cap the total cache, the media cache, and how old files can get before they're cleared (by default about 2 GB total and a month). Files you downloaded go to a separate folder, usually "Telegram Desktop" inside Downloads, and the cache settings don't touch them.

What you can lose, and what you can't

The two "No" rows are why it's worth pausing before a big clear. If someone deleted a message, or a channel removed a post, your cached copy may be the last one anywhere. Telegram's FAQ also notes that Secret Chats are device-specific and not part of the Telegram cloud. Don't reinstall the app as a quick fix if you have Secret Chats: they're gone after a reinstall too.

If a video matters, keep a real copy rather than relying on the cache. On the phone, save it to your gallery or Files. On a computer, you can save it from Telegram Web; our free extension adds a one-click save button there, which also keeps big files off your phone entirely. Does clearing Telegram cache delete my messages?

No. Messages and media in cloud chats stay on Telegram's servers and re-download when you open the chat. Clearing the cache only removes the copies stored on your device. Your chats, channels and Saved Messages are untouched.

Telegram storage full: what should I clear first?

Open Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage and look at the chart. Clear videos and files first, since they take the most space, or clear the one or two chats at the top of the list. Then set Keep Media for Private Chats to 1 month so it doesn't fill up again.

Why is Telegram taking up so much storage?

It caches every photo and video you open, plus whatever automatic download fetches. Private chats are kept forever by default, and Save to Gallery can make a second copy of everything. Set Keep Media and a maximum cache size under Storage Usage to cap it.

Why didn't my storage go down after clearing Telegram cache?

Usually because the copies are outside the cache: Save to Gallery or Save to Camera Roll put them in your photo library, and Telegram Desktop downloads go to a separate folder. Delete those separately. On iPhone, offloading the app doesn't free its Documents & Data either.

What is the difference between Clear Cache and Clear Local Database?

Clear Cache removes downloaded media. Clear Local Database, on Android, removes cached message text and compacts the database. Neither deletes anything from your account; both reload from Telegram's servers.

Is it safe to clear Telegram cache?

Yes for anything in a chat that still exists: it simply re-downloads. Two exceptions: media whose original message has since been deleted, and media from Secret Chats, which have no cloud copy. Save those first if you need them.

How do I clear Telegram cache on PC?

In Telegram Desktop go to Settings → Advanced → Manage local storage and choose Clear all, or clear by type. Manage limits sets a maximum size and age so it stays small. On Telegram Web K, use Settings → Data and Storage.
