Why Telegram is so much bigger than WhatsApp on the same phone

Telegram keeps a local copy of every photo, video, voice note and document you scroll past, so that reopening a chat is instant rather than a re-download. WhatsApp mostly stores what you were sent directly; Telegram also caches everything from every channel and large group you are in. If you follow a handful of active video channels, that difference is measured in tens of gigabytes.

This is a cache, not storage. The distinction matters because a cache is by definition disposable: the authoritative copy is on Telegram’s servers, and anything cleared comes back on demand.

How to clear it, on each platform

On Android and iOS: Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage. You get a breakdown by chat, a total, and a “Clear Cache” action. You can also clear a single conversation, which is the better move when one channel is responsible for most of it.

On Telegram Desktop: Settings → Advanced → Manage Local Storage. Same idea, and the desktop app tends to accumulate more because it is rarely under storage pressure.

On Telegram Web there is nothing to clear — it holds almost nothing locally, which is also why it feels slower on repeat visits.

The setting that stops it coming back

Clearing is a one-off; the useful change is the retention window in the same screen. “Keep media” can be set to 3 days, a week, a month or forever. Setting it to a week means Telegram discards its local copy of anything you have not looked at recently, automatically, and re-fetches if you scroll back.

Pair that with turning off automatic download for video and files on mobile data — covered in our guide to auto-download settings — and the cache largely stops being a problem rather than being something you clear every few weeks.

What is genuinely at risk

Media you deliberately saved to your device is not in the cache and is not affected. On Android that is normally the Telegram folder in your gallery; on desktop it is wherever you chose to save.

The one real exception is media from a chat that has since been deleted, or from a channel that has removed the post. Once your local copy is gone there is nothing left to re-download, because the server copy is gone too. If a video matters to you, save it out properly rather than relying on the cache to hold it — that is the difference between a cached file and a kept one.

Does clearing Telegram cache delete my messages?

No. Messages live on Telegram’s servers and are re-downloaded when you open the chat. Clearing the cache removes only the local copies of media and reclaims the disk space they were using. Your chat history, your channels and your Saved Messages are untouched.

Why does Telegram cache come back after I clear it?

Because caching is how the app stays fast. Every chat you open re-caches what you view. To stop it growing indefinitely, set a retention window under Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage → Keep media, and turn off automatic download for video and files.

Is it safe to clear Telegram cache?

Yes, with one caveat: if a message or channel post has since been deleted at the source, your cached copy was the last one in existence and clearing it is permanent. Anything still present in the chat will simply re-download.
