Three profiles, not one switch

Settings → Data and Storage → Automatic media download gives you separate configurations for “When using mobile data”, “When connected to Wi-Fi” and “When roaming”. Each has its own toggles for photos, video and files, and its own size threshold above which a file will not be fetched automatically.

Changing one does nothing to the others, which is why people who carefully disabled everything on mobile data still find the app has consumed 40 GB — Wi-Fi was untouched.

What each setting really costs

Photos are small and there is rarely a reason to disable them; a busy channel might add a few hundred megabytes a month.

Video is where the volume is. A single active video channel can push several gigabytes a week through auto-download, all of it cached locally whether or not you watched it. This is the setting worth changing.

Files covers documents and anything sent as a document — including videos sent uncompressed, which are the largest items in most chats. On mobile data this should almost always be off.

The size threshold nobody adjusts

Under each profile there is a limit slider that caps the size of an automatically downloaded file. Setting it to a few megabytes gives you the useful half of the feature — small images and short clips are ready instantly — while large videos wait until you actually tap them.

This is usually a better setting than turning auto-download off entirely, which makes the app feel sluggish on every single image.

Auto-download is not the same as auto-save

A separate setting, “Save to Gallery” (or “Save to Photos”), copies incoming media into your device’s camera roll. That one genuinely does add files to your phone that you then have to delete manually, and it is worth checking whether it is on per-chat.

Auto-download only fills Telegram’s own cache, which can be cleared in one action without losing anything from your account.

Does turning off auto-download delete anything?

No. It only changes when media is fetched. Anything already cached stays until you clear it, and the media itself remains in the chat on Telegram’s servers regardless.

Why is Telegram still using data with auto-download off?

Most often because only one of the three profiles was changed — disabling it for mobile data leaves Wi-Fi untouched. It is also worth checking that “Save to Gallery” is not enabled, which is a separate setting.
