Telegram’s file size limit, and why quality drops long before you reach it

The two numbers, and what they are not

The 2 GB and 4 GB figures are per file, not per day and not per account. Telegram does not limit how many files you upload or how much total space your account uses — cloud storage is unlimited, which is unusual and is the reason so many people use it as an archive.

The compression trap, which matters more

Attaching a video through the gallery picker sends it as media, and Telegram re-encodes it to a smaller size for fast previewing. This happens regardless of the file size — a 30 MB phone clip arrives visibly softer, and there is no warning.

To avoid it, attach via the paperclip → File (or “Send as File” / Document, depending on platform). The recipient gets the exact bytes you sent. The trade-off is that it appears as a file attachment rather than an inline playable video, and it counts against the 2 GB / 4 GB ceiling at its true size rather than a compressed one.

If you are on the receiving end and the sender used the media path, the quality is already gone — no downloader can restore it, because the original never reached Telegram. This is worth knowing before blaming the tool you saved it with.

When you genuinely need more than 4 GB

Split the file. A multi-part archive (7-Zip, WinRAR, or `split` on macOS and Linux) into parts under the ceiling is the only reliable route, and the recipient rejoins them. Cloud-link services work but move the content off Telegram, which defeats the point for most people using it as an archive.

Re-encoding to a smaller size is the other option, and for video is usually less lossy than people expect — a modern H.265 encode at half the bitrate is often indistinguishable at normal viewing distance.
