Recovering deleted Telegram photos and videos

Where to look, in order

Work down this list before you clear any cache, reinstall the app or restart your phone. Start with the first two: they take a minute, and they're where saved copies usually end up.

Groups: the 48-hour Recent Actions log

This is the one place Telegram itself keeps deleted content for a while. Its privacy policy says deleted messages from supergroups are stored for 48 hours after deletion so they can be shown in the admins' Recent Actions panel.

1. Open the group and tap its name to open the group info.
2. Open the admin settings (the pencil or Edit button, or Manage group on desktop).
3. Open Recent Actions and filter by deleted messages.
4. Open the deleted message and save the photo or video the way you normally would.

Only admins can see this log. If you're not one, ask an admin, and ask quickly: after 48 hours the copy is gone for good. Menu names shift slightly between app versions, and an old basic group with no Recent Actions entry has no log at all. Channels have a Recent Actions panel too, but Telegram only documents the 48-hour copy of deleted messages for groups.

Private chats: whose copy survives

In a one-to-one chat, either person can delete any message for both sides, with no time limit (Telegram FAQ). Once that happens, Telegram's server copy is gone and no tool can bring it back.

Deleting only for yourself is different. The message disappears from your side but stays in the other person's chat, so the simplest fix is to ask them to forward it back to you.

Secret chats have no server copy at all: deleting a message tells the other phone to delete it too, and self-destructing media disappears from both devices when its timer runs out.

Copies already on your devices

Android

Open your gallery app and look for the "Telegram" album (older versions used "Telegram Images" and "Telegram Video"). Telegram's Save to Gallery setting (Settings → Data and Storage) puts incoming media there, and anything you saved by hand lands there too.

Media you viewed but didn't save may still be in Telegram's own folder, under Android/data/org.telegram.messenger/files/Telegram in internal storage. On Android 11 and later that folder is restricted, so some file managers can't open it. Whether a deleted file is still there depends on the app version and the cache, so treat it as luck rather than a method.

iPhone

The iPhone app keeps its cache to itself, so the only on-device copy is in Photos, and only if Save to Camera Roll (Settings → Data and Storage) was on or you saved the file yourself. Photos keeps deleted items in Recently Deleted for 30 days.

Computer

On Windows, Telegram Desktop saves files you open or download to a "Telegram Desktop" folder inside Downloads, unless you changed the location in Settings → Advanced. Those files stay put after the message is deleted. If you ever ran Export Telegram data, the export folder has its own copy as well.

What won't work

• Server-side recovery services. Anything claiming to pull deleted messages from Telegram's servers is claiming data Telegram no longer holds.
• Telegram support. There is no restore request. Once a message is deleted for everyone, Telegram's own policy says it is gone forever.
• Phone undelete software. Telegram's cache is private to the app and modern phones encrypt their storage, so these tools rarely find anything a file manager couldn't.

Be especially wary of apps or bots that ask for your phone number and login code. Entering that code gives them a full session on your account, with access to everything you can read. How to stop it happening again

Every method that works above depends on a copy made before the deletion. So make the copy first.

• Forward anything important to Saved Messages. It becomes an independent copy that survives the original being deleted, or the whole channel disappearing. More in Saved Messages as cloud storage.
• Turn on Save to Gallery or Save to Camera Roll for the chats that matter to you.

Can deleted Telegram messages be recovered?

Not from Telegram's servers once they're deleted for everyone. Copies can survive elsewhere: in your phone gallery, Telegram Desktop's downloads folder, the other person's chat if they didn't delete it, or a group's Recent Actions log for 48 hours.

Can admins see deleted messages in a Telegram group?

Yes, for 48 hours. Telegram stores deleted messages from supergroups for 48 hours so they appear in the admins' Recent Actions panel. Regular members can't see this log.

Does Telegram have a recycle bin?

No. Deleted messages don't go to a trash folder, and Telegram support can't restore them. After a delete for everyone, the only copy Telegram itself keeps is a group's 48-hour admin log.

Can I recover deleted Telegram photos on iPhone?

Only if they were saved to Photos, either by the Save to Camera Roll setting or by hand. Check Photos and its Recently Deleted album, which keeps items for 30 days. The Telegram app's own cache isn't reachable on iPhone.

Are Telegram recovery apps real?

No app can retrieve content Telegram no longer stores. They either find local files a file manager could also find, or they ask for your login code, which hands over your whole account.

How do I stop losing Telegram media to deletion?
